Teaching a dog the concept of impulse control, or delayed gratification, is important for creating a calmer, more patient dog. One exercise that boosts a dog’s learned ability to wait patiently is training him to wait for the food bowl.
In the video below, trainer Mikkel Becker shows you the easy-to-achieve steps for teaching this foundational behavior to a puppy or adult dog. Seniors can benefit from the mind challenge as well — Mikkel’s own senior rescue Pomeranian, Mister Teddy, learned this trick at the ripe old age of 13! The concept of "wait" can also be applied to other situations in a dog’s life, including waiting to greet or waiting before walking through the dog park gate.
